What can I do to help?

There is a range of ways to get involved, and there is something for everyone. Whether you tell your story through being a case study, write to your MP, collect signatures for a petition or host an event, everything helps to raise awareness about coeliac disease.

Can I drink spirits?

Cider, wine, sherry, spirits, port and liqueurs are gluten free.

Experts agree that there is no physical way that pure distilled alcohol can contain gluten - this is because the gluten protein cannot travel through to the vapour produced by the prolonged heating in the distillation process and become part of the final alcohol product.

Distilled spirits only contain gluten if gluten containing ingredients are added after the distillation process and in this case, there is labelling legislation that ensures the product states CONTAINS wheat, barley, rye or oats on the label.

Can I get more t-shirts for my family?

When signing up please use the multi-person option to register and this will allow you to order up to 4 t-shirts. For any other queries please email Fundraising@coeliac.org.uk or call 0333 332 2033

What are the symptoms of coeliac disease?

The symptoms of coeliac disease vary from person to person and can range from very mild to severe. Common symptoms include:

  • frequent bouts of diarrhoea or loose stools
  • nausea, feeling sick and vomiting
  • stomach pain and cramping
  • lots of gas and bloating
  • feeling tired all the time, ongoing fatigue
  • anaemia (you would be told if you’re anaemic following a blood test)
  • weight loss (although not in all cases)
  • regular mouth ulcers
  • constipation or hard stools
  • skin rash (dermatitis herpetiformis, the skin manifestation of coeliac disease).

If you have any of these symptoms, you can take our online assessment which is a short questionnaire on symptoms and other risk factors for coeliac disease.

Are there any incentives for pharmacists taking part in the Community pharmacy supply of gluten-free foods scheme?

Introducing a pharmacy led supply scheme allows better stock control of gluten-free foods for pharmacists as well as providing a more flexible service to improve the patient experience.

Pharmacists and GP dispensaries are paid a service charge at six monthly intervals for each patient who accesses the service. When the scheme in Northamptonshire was introduced it was run as an Enhanced Service with funding for this element of the contract coming from Primary Care Contracting budgets.
