Awareness Month 2025
Coeliac disease is a serious autoimmune condition that affects 1 in 100 people in the UK. Only 36% are medically diagnosed, meaning there are an estimated 500,000 people living in the UK who are experiencing symptoms – and these symptoms are having a big impact on their lives.
Symptoms of coeliac disease can be recurrent, persistent or unexplained. They may include fatigue, mouth ulcers, anaemia, fertility issues, neurological issues such as numbness in the hands or feet and abdominal symptoms such as diarrhoea and bloating.
Our mission is to find the estimated 500,000 living with undiagnosed coeliac disease and guide them on the road to recovery.
This May, we’re fighting for everyone with coeliac disease by sharing real stories, raising awareness and empowering those affected by coeliac disease to recognise the signs, and ask “Could it be coeliac disease?” and take our online self-assessment.
How you can help
In the build up to Coeliac Awareness Month we’ll be sharing a range of ideas and ways you can support the campaign and get involved. In the meantime, make sure you’re following us on social media and signed up to our email newsletter for the latest updates.
Could it be coeliac disease
If you, or someone you know, is experiencing persistent, recurrent, or unexplained symptoms, visit isitcoeliacdisease.org.uk and take the online self-assessment to see if you should be tested. The assessment asks a series of questions based on the NICE guidelines for the diagnosis of coeliac disease. Once completed, you will receive a recommendation of whether you should go to your GP for a simple blood test.
