Kids, teens and young adults

Hi!

If you are brand new to coeliac disease then we know you might be a bit worried about it. It's OK to feel that way because this is all so new to you.  We're here to help you get the hang of it and show you that you are not alone. There are lots of other children and young people with coeliac disease in the UK too.

Even if you’ve been diagnosed for a while, it can still be challenging at times, especially when you’re going through new experiences such as starting a new school, meeting a new social group and even moving out of your family home.

Here is a safe space for everyone to access lots of information, hints and tips to help you manage your gluten free diet and understand more about coeliac disease. And we can help you to connect and share your experiences with others just like you.

Quick facts

  • Coeliac disease means is that you can't eat foods that have gluten in them.
  • Gluten is in wheat, barley and rye. These are called grains, but you will know them mostly as flour, so it's in regular bread and cake. It can also be found in soups, sausages and other places you might not expect, like chocolate.
  • If you do eat something with gluten it might upset your tummy, or make you feel poorly.
  • A gluten free diet is the only way to manage coeliac disease and we’re here to help

The good news

There are suitable versions of all your favourite foods. Yes, you can still have pizza and cake! Just gluten free ones. All you need to know is what to ask for and be on the look out for all the time.

You will see the term gluten free on lots of food products and on the menu when you are eating out. There are also thousands of suitable foods that do not contain any gluten that do not need to be labelled gluten free.

You will need to always check, or ask someone, if a food is suitable for you before you eat it and we have an app and lots of other resources to make that easier for you.

If your family is a member of Coeliac UK, you can have a card to carry around with you to help make it easier to talk to others about coeliac disease and the gluten free diet.
