- It's important to get medically diagnosed with coeliac disease
- There is only one clear way of getting diagnosed - a medical diagnosis with a blood test and gut biopsy.
There is only one reliable way of getting diagnosed – with a blood test and gut biopsy. In some cases, an endoscopy might not be needed to diagnose coeliac disease. Guidelines published in June 2020 in response to the Covid-19 pandemic recommend that some adults can be diagnosed without the need for a biopsy. Click here for more information.
Home testing kits for coeliac disease are now available over the counter and online. If you do use a home testing kit it is important that whatever the outcome you discuss your symptoms with your GP.
Alternative tests may claim to diagnose food related ‘problems’, allergies or intolerances, but they are not used for coeliac disease.
A few examples of tests that are not used to diagnosis coeliac disease are:
- applied kinesiology
- hair analysis
- IgG gliadin antibody tests
- leukocytotoxic tests
- vega testing.
These tests are not regarded as accurate or reliable. They do not diagnose coeliac disease.
If you think you may have coeliac disease, you should continue to eat a normal diet which contains gluten and discuss getting tested for coeliac disease with your GP.
