New allergen labelling changes on the horizon

6 June 2014

New legislation is on the horizon which will mean changes to the way foods are labelled.

The European Commission has published the Food Information Regulation (FIR) to simplify European food labelling. This combines rules on food and nutrition labelling into a single EU regulation.

The FIR will be introduced in December 2014 and will involve changes to the labelling of packaged foods and food sold by caterers. You can read more about the changes here.

To help law enforcement officers and businesses to understand the new regulation, the Food Standards Agency with the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) and the Department of Health have developed an e-learning online training course. It is free to access the modules that will help you improve your understanding of current food labelling legislation.

The online training can be accessed here via the Food Standards Agency website: Food labelling e-learning course.

Further guidance will be published at the end of summer and we will keep you updated as we hear more.
