Fresh bread is back on prescription in Ipswich and East Suffolk

13 May 2013

After listening to the views of people with coeliac disease Ipswich and East Suffolk Clinical Commissioning Groups has added fresh bread and some pasta products onto the list of items that can be prescribed.

A list of the gluten-free products now prescribed in Ipswich and East Suffolk is available on our website.

Ipswich and East Suffolk Clinical Commissioning Group introduced a gluten-free prescribing policy in 2012 which limited the range of gluten-free products available on prescription and stopped the prescribing of fresh bread. The prescribing of fresh bread was stopped due to concerns regarding additional handling and delivery charges being added to the cost of fresh gluten-free bread. However Juvela, Glutafin and Genius have finalised agreements within the supply chain to guarantee that additional costs will not be added in future. Ipswich and East Suffolk evaluated their policy via a local survey and the results were collated in April 2013
