Discussing allergen labelling with DEFRA

26 November 2018

Coeliac UK is today meeting with the Rt Hon Michael Gove MP and DEFRA as part of a review of allergen labelling law in light of recent tragic incidents widely reported in the media, relating to information on allergens in food that is provided to consumers.

This is an opportunity for patient groups and other stakeholders to discuss future policy options which would make improvements for consumers and improve clarity when it comes to food labelling. Currently, there are incidences where it isn’t always clear to consumers how they access the correct labelling information for their food. Where food is packaged onsite in a venue, it comes under different legislation to that of packaged food, and this can create confusion for people. The stakeholder summit which we are participating in, aims to ensure that this tragic scenario doesn’t happen again and will allow us to represent the needs of people following a gluten free diet.
